Fall has Arrived

Posted by pure on

Fall has arrived! With the change of weather comes a change in the hive. The bees are getting ready for winter. During this time of year, it is important that you actively monitor and test your hives for mites or diseases. Recently we took a course at the El Nino Bee Lab at UC Davis on Varroa Management Strategies. We learned a great deal on how to monitor, mitigate, and manage mites. Mites are a external paradise that attach themselves to bees and brood. They also carry a variety of diseases with them. Mites have been major pest of bees since the 1980's. Below is a link to a Ted Talk's that has documented the impact mites have on a bees first 21 days of life.

Since we are on the subject of continuing education, the American Beekeeping Federation Conference & Trade Show will be held January 9-13th in Reno, Nevada. We always look forward to educating ourselves in every aspect of beekeeping. Conferences and classes are a great way to continually learn about bees, the changes that are happening in their environment, and how we can best keep our bees healthy.

This week we started the UC Davis Farmers Market! You can find us every Wednesday, for the next six weeks, from 10-1:30 p.m. in front of the Quad. It is our fifth year at the UC Davis market.  We always look forward to connecting with UC Davis students and faculty. It is a small but mighty market. You can find: Your favorite Pure Honey, a variety of fall veggies and fruits, flowers, and an assortment of bakery products from Upper Crust. Just a reminder the Davis Farmers Market Picnic in the Park has one more month to go before it changes to the winter hours. Get outside on Wednesday to shop local, eat local, and enjoy local fun at Central Park from 4:30-8:30 p.m.
